CHINA GATEWAY
DID YOU KNOW?
1. CHINA GATEWAY is to be a warehousing complex on a scale we have never seen. The buildings will be so vast that they can be seen for miles around. 175 acres of prime farmland will be built on in a time of global food shortages. 100 more acres of farmland have already been purchased for the next phases.
2. This complex is to be built on top of Thanet’s natural drinking water supplies. This water comes from large underground lakes held in the chalk and relies on rainfall to pass through and collect. Building on top will effectively seal the aquifer, so will our precious drinking water supplies eventually dry up? Pollution of the waters is a real threat, Bejing showed us that the Environment is not high in Chinese priorities.
3. Rural heritage of Thanet will be gone forever. Quality tourist opportunities lost.
4. Yet again this sacrifice is to be made in the name of jobs. Possibly 1000 though experience of other such Chinese developments shows that most workers will be brought in from China as our minimum wage is considerably higher than theirs.
5. 2000 secondary jobs have been implied. A representative of the developers was interviewed and suggested that the people of Thanet could clean windows, mow grass, produce blinds and signs (not ongoing jobs) and apply for vending machine business. Not much to sacrifice our heritage for there then!!!
6. There are approximately 2000 people unemployed in the whole of Thanet. This fact alone strengthens the belief that Chinese workers would likely be imported to our shores during this time of credit crunch and lack of good housing.
7. This complex is described as “warehousing”. This indicates that quality production jobs would not be forthcoming, it will be a vast storage depot.
8. It is estimated that if all three Phases are passed it will require 17,000 truck trips per day to service the distribution of these goods. This figure is taken from the Developers’ own transport projections (see the document under “Transport” on the website). A vast profit for the Chinese another slap in the face for Thanet. There is very little parking at the site and NO provision for trucks.
9. A Chinese investor recently told the newspapers that the close proximity of Manston airport could lead to this complex becoming a business centre of European proportions. Noise, air and traffic pollution would be a nightmare.
10. These harsh facts spell out the DEATH of Thanet. Don’t think of escaping as your homes may well have become blighted.
